FIRST BLOG POST: Rules of the Road
December 31, 2009 0 CommentsDon't
Steal
Stay away from trademarks and/or anything else
that would tend to build your domain dynasty on the backs of
intellectual property and/or the good will generated through the
hard work and investment of protected third parties.
PERIOD!
Without even getting into legal specifics,
here's a very simple, common sense rule of
thumb:
If the domain you are about to register will
interefere or "short- stop" visitor traffic that is clearly trying
to go somewhere else, then you are likely tapping into someone
else's revenue stream. That's not a good business model for
success, and it will not only NOT make you rich,
it could put all your assets (both current and future) at risk. So
don't do it.
Patience
Please
One way or another you will eventually learn
that most domains are literally a dime a dozen and that millions
more are worth far less. State lotteries and Vegas aside, you're
not going to make millions overnight by finding
that single, golden domain name that everybody else somehow missed
the last two decades. In the 1990's, there was a brief period of
time when the domain vault of riches was open to all with vision of
what was to come. And those with the vision are now millionaires
many times over. That's not to say that others have not become very
wealthy from domain names since then, but that vault of riches has
long been emptied, and for that reason, it's highly unlikely that
you will register a domain name today, sell it tomorrow and retire
in the lap of luxury. Slim has left town. But for those with ideas,
a work ethic and and the ability to execute, there are still plenty
of opportunites.
